floral maxi dress

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a good weekend! Sorry I’ve been MIA over the past week. I have been busy getting ready for our 2 week vacation in South Africa. Let me tell you, packing for 2 weeks is difficult, but the hardest part of it is trying to get your suitcase to weight under 50 pounds. I see a baggage overweight charge in my near future.

Anyway, we leave tomorrow and I’m beyond excited! I will try and share some outfits and travel photos on the blog while I’m over there, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, today on the blog I’m sharing this floral maxi dress from Back Down South Boutique in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

img_1177

As I’ve mentioned before, Back Down South is one of my favorite local boutiques here in south central Kentucky. They have all the newest and trending items including clothing, accessories, jewelry and even some home goods. I know every time I go there I will not be leaving empty handed.

The best way to see their current merchandise is on Instagram. Their Instagram account is @BackDownSouthBG – be sure to give them a follow!

img_1175

This floral maxi dress is perfect to wear this fall, especially when the temperatures are more indicative of summer. This maxi dress drapes away from the body and flows gracefully downward. It is loose fitting on both the top and bottom. This dress has an elastic waistband that hits at a persons natural waist line creating a flattering yet slimming effect. From the waistline down, the fabric flows outward giving it an almost cape like appearance that is also very elegant. The light blue color of this maxi dress is totally trending this fall and looks great on every skin tone.

img_1162

The top of this dress is a v-neck with flutter sleeves. It can easily be worn with a regular bra or a colored bralette depending on your personal preference and style.

moto jackets

It’s Thursday and we all know what that means, it is almost the weekend! Here in Kentucky, it has been grey, gloomy and raining for most of the week. I don’t know about you, but I am ready to see the sun shine it’s rays again.

Today, I’m going to talk about how to wear and style a summer dress or in my case, a jumpsuit into the upcoming fall season.

img_1097

It may be hard to tell, but this is a jumpsuit. This black and white striped jumpsuit is from Anthropologie. I saw another fashion blogger wearing it and I immediately fell in love.

img_1095

The pants of this jumpsuit are extremely wide legged. This wide legged style makes this jumpsuit drape loosely from the body and flow gracefully. It literally feels like you are wearing a cloud. The fabric is so soft, and I can honestly say that this is one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing currently in my closet.

img_1136

img_1131

As the weather begins to change and the temperatures become cooler, jackets are a MUST! With a jacket, you can easily transition a summer dress or jumpsuit into the upcoming fall season.

img_1132

I layered this jumpsuit with a moto jacket I purchased from TJ Maxx (no surprise there). Moto jackets are a great staple piece to any wardrobe. If you wanting to rev up your style, moto jackets create an edgy look that will kick your fashion into high gear. These jackets can be paired with almost everything from dresses to jumpsuits and the classic jeans and a top.

img_1133

I have linked some similar style moto jackets here, here and here. The first two are priced under $30, and the last is $60. Moto jackets come in many different colors and are made with a variety of fabrics. Typically, the higher priced jackets are made with leather while the lower priced jackets are made using a faux leather or polyester blend material. Either way, wear something that makes you comfortable and is in your price range.

floral embroidered tops and TJ Maxx navigation

Hey y’all! Today I will be talking about TJ Maxx and how I navigate through the store as well as embroidered tops and how to style them for the upcoming fall season.
img_1089

I purchased this floral embroidered top at TJ Maxx. As you all know, I’m obsessed with TJ Maxx! It is one of my favorite places to shop and my husband can definitely attest to that. I know for many people TJ Maxx can be overwhelming, making it a place they don’t trend to visit and shop. I will be honest, I used to be one of those people. That was until I figured out a shopping plan and method for navigating the store.

img_1086

When first entering any TJ Maxx store, the purses are usually located in the front to one side or the other along with luggage. Purses are not something I typically shop for so I trend to bypass that section and head into the beauty products which is located behind the purses and luggage.

The beauty section is fabulous! They have everything from high end skincare products, bath accessories, makeup, makeup brushes and things you didn’t know you even needed. This is the section I tend to find new and different beauty products to sample. I love buying face masks here because the prices are half of what other stores sell them for. I also purchase many of my makeup sponges (knock off beauty blenders) here. Beauty blenders are my favorite thing to apply my foundation and concealer with but they are priced at a whopping $20 at Sephora. TJ Maxx has tons of off brand blending sponges and are all priced under $5! Why buy one sponge when you can get 4 for the same price?

img_1083

Up next and behind the beauty department is the shoe section. TJ Maxx is a great place to find shoes for every season. There are many different high end brands and are half the price from other stores. The shoe section is divided by sizes so its easy to find the shoes that will best fit your feet. I purchased these gold mules from TJ Maxx for $16. I have linked similar styles here, here and here. All the styles linked are metallic in color and all priced under $25.

img_1093

Depending upon the particular TJ Maxx store you are in, the clothing is almost always located in the center of the store. This is the section people usually become overwhelmed. The first tip I will give someone is to have in mind some things you might be looking for such as jeans, a dress, or sweaters. The clothing section is divided into categories by rows. If you have something you want to purchase in mind, this will make it easy to automatically bypass some of these rows. But if you are like myself and go with no plan in mind, the best place to start looking for clothing to purchase is on the borders.

The outside borders of the clothing section is where they tend to put the newest and best selling products. This is where you will find popular styles and seasonal trends. This is a great place to start and is typically where you will find the best items.

img_1090

And that’s it, a quick run down of how I navigate TJ Maxx. I highly recommend adding TJ Maxx and Marshall’s into your list of places to shop if you don’t frequently visit these stores already.

The last tip I will give you is to go in with an open mind, because you never know what you will find.

img_1092

Now that you know all my TJ Maxx secrets, I’m going to quickly talk about floral embroidered top. I have linked similar styles here, here, here, here and here. Floral embroidered tops are extremely popular this season. These tops can be styles with a variety of bottoms and some in different colors depending on the thread colors used within the embroidery.

I love colored jeans. Jeans in a color besides the typically navy blue can make an unexpected statement and elevate an outfits visual appeal. These burgundy jeans pictured above are from Old Navy. Old Navy is my favorite place to buy jeans, especially colored ones.

olive green

Hey y’all! Happy Monday! After today, there are only 2 more Mondays until we leave for South Africa! It’s finally starting to sink in that we will soon be adventuring half way around the world. Is it too soon to start packing?

This past weekend was the first in a long time that I didn’t have anything planned. It was nice to kick back and relax at home with Landon and the dogs. The outfit I’m sharing today is like this past weekend, laid back and causal.

And WARNING: there are puppies ahead!

img_1084

If you haven’t read the last blog post, I discussed vests and their versatility as the seasons begin to change. Like I mentioned in that post, I love vests and they are the perfect fall accessory. What I like so much about this particular vest is the color. Olive green is one of my favorite colors to wear, especially in the fall. This color pairs well with everything. I frequently wear this color whether it be in a form of a vest, top, cardigan or jeans. If this color is not currently in your closet, I highly recommend it. Olive green looks good on all skin tones and makes a subtle statement.

img_1113

This olive green utility vest is from Target. It is so soft and great for layering. I paired this vest with a white pom pom sweater tank top from Loft. This sweater tank is currently on sale for $16! It is great to wear during this transitioning weather.

img_1111

When it comes to jeans, look no further than Old Navy. Old Navy jeans are my absolute favorite! Especially the Rockstar style (pictured above and below). These jeans are a great price and Old Navy almost always has their inventory on sale. These jeans durable and extremely flattering. Even Blake Lively rocks Old Navy jeans!

img_1109

img_1110

Lastly, since I started at the top, I’m going to end at the bottom. The shoes I am wearing are Toms and are wedge booties. Unfortunately, they are not currently available online but I linked a similar style here. Toms are hands down my favorite brand of shoes. Whether it be the classic flats or a bootie, every pair gives you the same amount of comfort. I never feel guilty about purchasing a pair of Toms because for every pair purchased an additional pair is donated to someone in need. I swear by Toms and highly recommend the Desert Wedges if you are in the market for a long lasting, causal and comfortable fall bootie.

versatile vests

Hey y’all! Happy Thursday! This week has flown by…I can’t believe tomorrow is already Friday. My list of things that need to get done before vacation keeps getting longer & longer.

On the bright side, I’m totally digging these cooler temperatures! It’s been nice being able to turn off the air conditioning and open up the windows. I’m also in love with the fact that I’m able to break out some fall clothes and add them to my daily wardrobe!

img_1024

Some of my favorite fall accessories are vests. Vests are a great layering piece to wear when the weather is transitioning from warm to cool. Personally, my favorite style of vests are utility vests (which is what I’m wearing in the photos). These vests have multiple cargo type pockets, and usually have a drawstring around the waist, or on the bottom.

img_1027

Vests can be layered over anything…whether that be a t-shirt and jeans or a dress. Here, I styled a plain white button down t-shirt dress with a rust colored vest from TJMaxx, adding a simple pair of Toms open toe booties.

The mixture of colors in this outfit are perfect for fall. This white dress creates a clean canvas to add different colored accessories.

img_1073

I found tons of different style & colored vests online. I’ve linked some of my favorites here, here, here and here. All of these vests are reasonably priced and perfect for fall!

mustard yellow

Mustard yellow is one of the most popular color trends right now.  It’s a bold color that demands attention!  Not to mention, it’s a great color to wear during the fast approaching fall season.  Imagine the brightly colored fall leaves falling, crisp, cool air, a pumpkin spice latte in hand, all while wearing mustard yellow.  It just makes sense!

img_1033

This floral jumpsuit is one of the latest additions to my ever-growing jumpsuit collection.  The piece is Jealous Tomato, and I purchased it from a local boutique in Bowling Green, Back Down South.  They have the cutest clothes!  I never leave there empty handed.

img_1065

This mustard yellow floral jumpsuit has a cutout detail on both sides, as well as the back. I can’t lie, this makes the bra situation a little tricky, but definitely doable.  These cutout details elevate this jumpsuit to a new level, adding an extra bit of style & edge.

img_1062

The accessory options for this jumpsuit are endless.  It has a fall-friendly, floral pattern that can easily be worn with any color purse.  I paired it with navy tassel earrings from H&M.

img_1064-1

Whether its a jumpsuit, top, pants or dress, mustard yellow is the IT color this season.  If you don’t already have a piece in your closet that’s this color, I highly recommend it.  It’s an easy color to wear on most skin tones, and matches just about anything.

Go out there and invest in a new piece of clothing.  I know you won’t regret it!  Thanks for stopping by to check out this Wednesday’s edition of Flights and Fashion!

turn a summer sale item into a fall essential

The first official day of fall is September 22nd, which is right around the corner.  Even though it may not be official, these fall-like, cooler temperatures have everyone in a frenzy!  I find myself becoming more & more excited about the upcoming season change, thanks in large part to the temperatures beginning to tumble.

As the summer season comes to an end, stores will be placing summer styles on heavy discount, shipping them to the sale rack in order to make room for incoming fall merchandise.

This may come as no surprise…it’s a great time to stock up on some summer outfits you may have been lusting over all season.  These summer styles can be saved, worn during next year’s summer season, or be paired with layering pieces into fall, which is exactly what I did here.

img_1045-1

img_1025-1

I had been wanting this v-neck flutter sleeve top from Anthropologie all summer long, but refused to pay the $78 price.  When browsing through their sale tab a few weeks ago, I noticed this top was placed on a major discount at only $12!

I immediately placed it in my virtual cart and proceeded to check out.  This lightweight v-neck top is both casual and flattering.  The sleeves have a pleated flutter detail that is eye catching, making this top stand out in a crowd.

The flutter sleeve has a subtle, floral pattern, that can be mixed & matched with a variety of different colored bottoms.  This top is a great transition piece, and can be paired with an array of bottoms/accessories, depending on the weather.

img_1029-1

I styled this top with a pair of army green cargo pants from TJ Maxx.  These cargo style, elastic band bottoms fit very comfortably, and are an easy wear.  This army green color is one of my favorites.  It can be styled with lots of other colors & patterns.  I found a pair of similar pants here… they’re currently 50% off!

img_1031-1

Don’t rule out your summer wardrobe as soon as the weather changes. With the right layering pieces, many of your clothing items can be worn year round.
